FAQ
How does an osteopathic treatment proceed?
In my osteopathic practice in Solln, every treatment begins with a thorough and individualized medical history . During this personal consultation, I take the time not only to understand your current symptoms but also to discuss important information about your medical history, daily routine, previous injuries, or any particular stresses. This holistic approach is a central element of osteopathy and helps to better understand the possible causes of your symptoms.
Following the medical history, the osteopathic examination and treatment take place. The patient lies down on the treatment table – either sitting or lying down – while the osteopath examines the body with trained hands. The aim is to identify and specifically treat so-called somatic dysfunctions , i.e., functional disorders of muscles, joints, fascia, or internal organs.
Osteopathy is based on the premise that all structures of the body are interconnected. Therefore, treatment is not limited to the painful area. Typically, the entire body is examined to identify connections, release blockages, and sustainably support the body's natural self-healing abilities.
What can osteopathy help with?
Osteopathy is a holistic, manual treatment concept that aims to identify and treat functional disorders in the body . It understands the human being as a unity of body, mind, and nervous system and considers the interactions between muscles, joints, fascia, internal organs, and the nervous system.
In my osteopathic practice in Solln , I frequently use osteopathy to treat diffuse functional disorders. These include, among others:
• Musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., back, neck, or joint pain)
• Tension headaches and functional jaw problems
• complaints following injuries or operations
• functional digestive disorders
• stress-related complaints and states of exhaustion
• functional disorders during pregnancy
• Osteopathic care for infants and children with functional disorders
Important: Osteopathy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. No promises of a cure are made. The goal of osteopathic treatment is to support the body's self-regulating and self-healing powers .
How many osteopathic treatments are necessary?
The number of osteopathic treatments cannot be determined in general terms, as it depends on various factors – including the type, duration and intensity of the complaints as well as the individual conditions of the patient.
In my osteopathic practice in Solln, experience shows that three to five treatments can be beneficial for many patients. With acute conditions , patients often report noticeable improvements after just one to three osteopathic sessions . However, for longer-standing or chronic conditions, it may take more time and several appointments before an improvement is seen.
Regardless, many patients also use osteopathy preventively to detect functional limitations early, to support intensive athletic performance/exertion, or to promote general physical well-being. A recommended interval between treatments in these cases would be four to eight weeks.
What is the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy (also called physical therapy) and osteopathy follow different therapeutic approaches . Physiotherapy often focuses on active exercises performed by the patient. The goal is to strengthen, mobilize, or improve the range of motion of specific body regions. Manual techniques, in which the patient is treated passively, are also used in physiotherapy. The focus is primarily on the musculoskeletal system, i.e., muscles, joints, and spine.
Osteopathic treatment, on the other hand, is performed exclusively manually by the therapist. The osteopath works with their hands and considers the body holistically. According to osteopathic principles, treatment can include not only the musculoskeletal system, but also internal organs, fascia, and the central and peripheral nervous systems. The goal is to identify functional relationships throughout the body and support its self-regulation.
An osteopath is not automatically also a physiotherapist – and vice versa. However, it is possible for a practitioner to possess both qualifications.
In Germany, osteopathy may only be practiced by physicians or alternative practitioners . Due to the complexity of osteopathy, several years of osteopathic training as well as regular continuing education and advanced training are essential.
Do I need a doctor's referral for osteopathy?
A doctor's referral is generally not required for osteopathic treatment . Osteopathy is considered an independent healthcare service, so patients can visit an osteopath directly and schedule an appointment – even without a prior doctor's visit.
In some cases, it may still be advisable to have a medical examination beforehand, especially in the case of unclear, acute, or serious symptoms. Regardless of their medical specialty, doctors can also issue a recommendation or referral for osteopathy , for example, as part of a holistic treatment plan or as a complementary therapy.

Will my statutory health insurance cover the costs of osteopathy?
Many statutory health insurance companies now partially cover the costs of osteopathic treatments . Whether and to what extent reimbursement for osteopathy is possible depends on the specific benefits offered by your health insurance company.
To be on the safe side, we recommend contacting your statutory health insurance provider directly before starting treatment. Statutory health insurance providers generally require a written medical recommendation for partial reimbursement. This can be issued by your doctor, for example, in the form of a referral or a private prescription .
In my osteopathic practice in Solln, I am happy to provide you with general information about the procedure. However, only your health insurance company can give you binding information regarding cost coverage.
Are osteopathic treatments reimbursed by private health insurance companies, government assistance programs, or private supplementary insurance?
Many private health insurance companies , government-provided health benefits programs , and private supplemental insurance plans cover the costs of osteopathic treatments, either fully or partially. However, whether and to what extent reimbursement for osteopathy is possible depends on the individual terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
Since coverage can vary depending on your plan, we recommend contacting your private health insurance provider, public assistance office, or supplemental insurance provider directly before starting treatment, or reviewing your insurance documents. In some cases, certain requirements must be met, such as a doctor's referral or treatment by a qualified osteopath.
I would be happy to inform you about the general billing procedure at my osteopathy practice in Solln . However, only your insurance company can provide binding information regarding cost coverage.
